What do they mean? &#8211; An infographic by the team at &lt;a href=&#8221;https:\/\/www.freightera.com&#8221;&gt;Freightera&lt;\/a&gt;<\/textarea><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Shipping Container Markings<\/h2>\n<h3><strong>1) The Name of Container Owner or Lessor<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This identifies the owner or lessor of the container, for example, the shipping line Maersk Line, or the leasing company Triton International.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2) The Container Number<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The main identifier of the container. A container number is made up of 7 characters in an alpha-numeric sequence, made up of 4 letters and 7 numbers. This number is unique to a container and is never duplicated.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First 3 letters: Owner code (e.g. MAEU for Maersk Line)*<\/li>\n<li>First 6 digits: Serial number<\/li>\n<li>7th digit: Check digit<\/li>\n<li>4th letter: Category Identifier. U, J, or Z:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li>U for all freight containers<\/li>\n<li>J for detachable freight container-related equipment<\/li>\n<li>Z for trailers and chassis.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This owner code is registered with the Bureau International des Containers et du Transport Intermodal (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bic-code.org\/check-digit-calcul\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BIC<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3) Check Digit<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s the last digit of the container number listed above. This number is used to identify if the container number sequence is valid or not.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>4) ISO Code<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>International Standards Organisation under their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.containercontainer.com\/ISO6346\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">code IS06346<\/a> gives each container type a unique ISO Code in order to avoid any ambiguity in identifying the size and type of container.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>5) MAX. GW<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Max Gross Weight indicates the maximum weight that the container can carry. Gross weight includes the tare weight of the container.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>6) TARE<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is the tare weight which is the weight of an empty container. This is an important weight to be considered by all ship operators and planners as this weight needs to be included when container stowage planning is done.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>7) MAX. CW or Max. Payload<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The maximum weight of the cargo that can be packed in the container.
