On the other hand, <\/span><b>the inexperienced shipper is more likely to try and make a parallel between shipping a parcel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or sending something to their aunt via their dad <\/span><b>and shipping freight<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both types of shippers tend to regret their mistakes when they see the revision on their invoices. So let us save you the headache with this quick read! <\/span><b>So read on<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as we jump right on in!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why would I need shipping documents? The carrier already has them!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We often get shippers both green and seasoned that, for whatever reason, <\/span><b>don\u2019t forward the Bill of Lading and\/or the customs invoice to their shipping location<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This happens for a number of reasons and some of them are <\/span><b>forgetfulness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the <\/span><b><i>assumption <\/i><\/b><b>that the carrier already has all of the information and paperwork on hand<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>carriers only really need very broad information about the delivery location when arranging a pickup<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They need a <\/span><b>city, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and if they\u2019re being specific, <\/span><b>a postal or zip code<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That means that they\u2019re missing basically half of the information about your shipment if they don\u2019t get a bill of lading at pickup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s simple. <\/span><b>Just forward a bill of lading to the carrier in advance <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Or just notify Freightera and we\u2019ll handle the rest)<\/span><b>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order for a driver to bring a BOL with them, <\/span><b>they need to be notified<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of this request and the paperwork needs to be forwarded to them <\/span><b>at least 24 hours in advance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s because they\u2019re in the field and <\/span><b>trucks go back to their docks in the evening when everything is picked up or delivered<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dispatchers are dealing with a large number of shipments daily and mistakes happen even without them having to handle additional paperwork for each separate truck they\u2019re handling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And finally, drivers can get a request for a pickup <\/span><b><i>while <\/i><\/b><b>they\u2019re in the field<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making pickups or deliveries. That means <\/span><b>there\u2019s no way for them to have the paperwork unless it\u2019s given to them<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the time of pickup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considering that this happens relatively often, it\u2019s not surprising that <\/span><b>the pickup location is expected to have the papers ready<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the time of pickup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a home business! That means it\u2019s a business!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sounds straightforward, right? Well, not exactly. You probably already know that <\/span><b>pickups and deliveries to residential areas or locations come with extra charges<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you didn\u2019t, now you do. This causes some confusion for newer shippers or shippers looking to save some money. If a shipment is going to or from a home business, can it be said that it\u2019s going to\/from a business?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, if the carrier sees a residence on the premises, they will treat the location as residential. In other words, <\/span><b>if people reside there, it\u2019s a residence and residential charges will be applied<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These grey areas are non-negotiable since carriers would have to spend half of their time simply debating whether a location should be considered commercial or residential. In order to avoid this, rules have been applied which make things easier and more transparent for everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I could get this off the truck myself. We don\u2019t need a tailgate!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>Not only should you not do this<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but, fortunately for you, <\/span><b>the carrier will not allow you to<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in most cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether carriers should charge for pressing a button on a hydraulic tailgate in order to load or offload a shipment is up for discussion. Making you use a tailgate instead of unloading freight by hand, however, is not. <\/span><b>There are very good reasons why these rules exist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the carriers, it\u2019s <\/span><b>liability <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and for the people involved it\u2019s <\/span><b>safety<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some carriers may look the other way if your shipment is light enough to be taken easily and doesn\u2019t pose a significant risk. A ballpark figure is about 120 lbs in weight. <\/span><b>Anything over that is most likely unsafe for unloading by hand<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay safe and surprise-free and <\/span><b>request a tailgate ahead of time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only 1%? That\u2019s not a bad-sounding statistic <\/span><b>until it happens to you<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Save yourself the \u201cWhat are the odds?\u201d monologue by <\/span><b>properly packaging your freight<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You receive an email later in the day that your pickup has been missed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If this hasn\u2019t happened to you, it would have if you assumed that the driver would see your request before pickup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hint: The special instructions section is meant for additional instructions that the driver can use <\/span><b>in case your location is difficult to find or access, or if the GPS isn\u2019t accurate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for your area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Drivers are busy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they\u2019re on the road or in traffic and need to constantly pay attention to their surroundings. That means that <\/span><b>they won\u2019t always have time to read anything more about your pickup request other than the address and number of skids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they\u2019re picking up.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately,<\/span><b> pickups by appointment are not a thing for LTL shipments<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as many unforeseen delays may occur due to the nature of the industry. Long loading or unloading times, traffic, broken trucks, etc. <\/span><b>Some carriers, however, do have the option of a paid service for calls ahead<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of pickup that ensures that the driver will give you a call ahead of time. Outside of that, pickup and delivery dates are not guaranteed for LTL shipments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why you want to <\/span><b>make sure that there is someone available to receive or hand over the cargo<\/b> <b>during standard business hours<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the requested pickup\/delivery date. This way you ensure that your cargo is picked up without any confusion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This option\u2019s more expensive! It has to be better!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve done the surveys, so we know that most of our customers appreciate a good price above everything else. And why wouldn\u2019t they?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, every now and again, there\u2019s a client that needs something shipped fast and reliably without paying much attention to the price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since our quoting and booking are mostly automated, it\u2019s very simple to get everything done on your own in a matter of minutes. In such cases, <\/span><b>it\u2019s easy for you to go for a more expensive option because it shows a shorter transit time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or simply because it costs more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t fall for this trap. More expensive does not (always) mean that a carrier is better, faster, or more reliable than a cheaper alternative. There are a number of reasons why a carrier may be pricier on a given lane. It is possible that <\/span><b>they use a partner for an area<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that raises the price. <\/span><b>An area may be far away from their terminal<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and they only service it periodically at higher prices.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some cases, carriers that \u201cdon\u2019t like\u201d a specific lane simply <\/span><b>say an outrageous price so as to avoid doing it whenever possible<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If they have to do it, they at least get paid handsomely for it. It\u2019s a win-win.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why <\/span><b>you shouldn\u2019t assume that a price tells you an honest story<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If one pallet costs $100, wouldn\u2019t two be $200 at the maximum? Well, no. In some cases, your price can more than triple for a single pallet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why it\u2019s strongly recommended that you <\/span><b>get a quote for a specific and accurate shipment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that you know the details of.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several types of pricing in freight shipping and depending on the carrier, your rate can remain quite similar or it can skyrocket really fast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, simply try to make sure that your shipment matches what was quoted and that you\u2019ve packaged your shipment sufficiently and efficiently. <\/span><b>You don\u2019t want to overly pad anything<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so as to avoid paying for shipping air, and <\/span><b>you don\u2019t want to change anything without requoting beforehand<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it was lunchtime! It\u2019s not our fault they came during lunchtime.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This assumption has cost many a shipper their hard-earned money. Missed pickup and delivery fees are, fortunately, easy to avoid. All you have to do is <\/span><b>be on-site and available during standard business hours<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a carrier arrives and attempts to pick up or deliver a shipment while the staff is unavailable or unwilling to assist them, they will leave to handle other pickups or deliveries. <\/span><b>Your shipment will be marked as missed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why we recommend that <\/span><b>when you take a break, someone be available to jump in to help the driver<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with loading or unloading and get back to their break when they\u2019re done. This way, you <\/span><b>avoid the extra charges and save yourself delays and the headache<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of having to wait for the driver the next day too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can already tell that the pattern of the solutions is similar. Make sure to <\/span><b>do everything in your power to make sure that shipments get where they need to be<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s sticking out just a bit. It will be fine!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More broadly, this assumption goes for packaging in general, but protruding material is a common issue with less experienced shippers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, if it\u2019s on a skid it should be properly packaged, right? As we mentioned earlier, this is not the case. Properly packaging your cargo is a multi-step process that ensures that both your and other peoples\u2019 cargo will be safe from damage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your shipment is protruding from the skid at all, your best bet is to assume that it\u2019s not going to be accepted by the carrier. This goes from a corner of a container sticking out all the way to pipes that look like they could do more damage than a bullhorn. And no, such pipes aren\u2019t properly packaged if they\u2019re shrink-wrapped either. The first point of contact your shipment should have with any other shipment on the truck should be the pallet. This is the safest way to think about packaging your cargo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay safe and keep your shipment within the (pallet) lines.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of us are taught from childhood that it\u2019s bad to assume.
