Sometimes the client has a point, and other times not so much.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what\u2019s the difference?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Value-Added Services (or VAS)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b>A VAS is any service added to your order that falls outside the scope of what\u2019s considered the industry standard<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in freight shipping. For example, a liftgate is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freightera.com\/freight-shipping-guide\/additional-services-in-freight-shipping\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">value-added service<\/a> despite the fact that they\u2019re a fairly common request.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s because the industry standard is B2B, dock-to-dock shipping. Both sides are businesses, both sides have docks or forklifts for loading and unloading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, VAS are services of value (<\/span><b>necessary for the successful completion of pickup, care during transit, or delivery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) added to your shipment, <\/span><b>similar to ordering extra fries to go with your meal.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some examples of value-added services:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-8647\" src=\"https:\/\/www.freightera.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/VAS-min-1024x283.jpg\" alt=\"Freightera's extra services prompt on the quoting page\" width=\"640\" height=\"177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.freightera.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/VAS-min-1024x283.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.freightera.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/VAS-min-300x83.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.freightera.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/VAS-min-768x213.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.freightera.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/VAS-min.jpg 1532w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limited Access<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inside Pickup\/Delivery<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jigger\/Pallet Jack (Although most carriers will have one with them, it\u2019s not bad to check beforehand)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small Truck (If your location cannot accommodate a 53\u2019 truck)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freightera.com\/freight-shipping-guide\/trade-show-freight-shipments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trade Show<\/a> Pickup\/Delivery<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delivery by Appointment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon Delivery<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extra Charges<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extra charges are perhaps, along with unforeseen delays or damage, the most common grievance a freight shipper may have. The number of people who are subject to extra charges may be significantly reduced if we don\u2019t include valid VAS added to an invoice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s break it down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extra charges are a big no-no at Freightera. We strive to make sure all of our rates are all-inclusive and final as long as you quote for what you need.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if you have a dock or forklift on your location and the carrier adds a tailgate charge to the invoice, that\u2019s unfair and it\u2019s something our team will work hard on disputing and removing from your invoice. Keep in mind that<\/span><b> if the proof of delivery (POD) is signed as having a tailgate used, there is very little our team can do<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you do not require a service and do not want it used, make sure to scan the POD and sign only if you\u2019re happy with what you see.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Some other common extra charges that we get to see daily are reweighs and reclassifications.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In our experience, these are generally valid. So what can you do to avoid them?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Make sure that the weight you enter during quoting is the exact weight of your shipment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including the weight of the pallet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the USA and cross-border shipments, class is a big one. Considering that most classes are calculated based on the weight and dimensions of your cargo, you\u2019ll want to <\/span><b>be 100% sure of both of these measurements before you get a quote<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if your location does not have the means to load or unload your heavy cargo and the carrier adds a tailgate service charge to the invoice, that\u2019s fair game since it was necessary in order to complete your order. That would be a value-added service, not an extra charge.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how can you tell?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a great article we wrote a while back on how to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freightera.com\/blog\/how-to-avoid-extra-charges-in-freight-shipping\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoid extra charges in freight shipping<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
