Here’s Why That’s a Big Deal, and Why the Work Isn’t Done<\/span><\/h2>\n

Something remarkable happened in 2025, and it deserves to be recognized before we talk about everything still ahead.<\/span><\/p>\n

For the first time in a century, renewable energy overtook coal as the world’s largest source of electricity. According to<\/span> Ember’s Global Electricity Review 2026<\/span><\/a>, renewables (solar, wind, hydropower, and bioenergy combined) generated 33.8% of the world’s electricity in 2025, edging past coal at 33.0%. It was the first time in 100 years that coal fell below a third of global generation.<\/span><\/p>\n

That is a significant milestone, and it is worth understanding what it means and, perhaps just as importantly, what it doesn\u2019t mean.<\/span><\/p>\n

What actually happened<\/b><\/h2>\n

The numbers tell a beautiful story. Renewables reached 10,730 terawatt-hours of generation in 2025, while coal dropped to 10,476. Coal power fell 0.6% year over year, its first decline since 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n

Solar did most of the heavy lifting. Global solar generation jumped a record 30% in a single year, its fastest growth in eight years, and has now grown more than tenfold since 2015. That means that the world’s solar output is now roughly the size of the <\/span>entire European Union’s electricity demand<\/span><\/a>. Solar has been the fastest-growing power source on the planet for 21 years running, and in 2025 it overtook wind for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here is the part that matters most for the long term. Clean electricity grew fast enough to cover all the new demand the world added in 2025, and then some. That kept fossil generation essentially flat rather than climbing to meet growth, which is what used to happen every year. Ember calls this “the era of clean growth,” and it is a real shift in how the global power system behaves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not quite there yet<\/b><\/h2>\n

It would be easy to read that headline and conclude the energy transition is basically finished, and that the rest is just pro forma. It is not, and it\u2019s important that we\u2019re transparent about that.<\/span><\/p>\n

The milestone applies to electricity. And electricity, for all its importance, is only about a quarter of the total energy the world actually uses. The rest powers things like industrial heat, building heating, and, most relevant to us, transportation. When you look across all of that energy, modern renewables supply only around 13% of the total.<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, renewables leading in electricity is a huge and hard-won achievement in one important corner of the energy system. But most of the world still runs on fossil fuels, and the biggest remaining challenges are in the sectors that electricity has barely touched.<\/span><\/p>\n

Freight is right at the center of one of those challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n

Where fossil fuels still rule: transportation and freight<\/b><\/h2>\n

Transportation is the clearest example of a sector where oil still dominates. In 2025, petroleum products accounted for about 89% of the US\u2019s transportation energy use. Globally, road transport makes up around 45% of oil demand.<\/span><\/p>\n

Freight is a big part of that picture. The<\/span> International Energy Agency<\/span><\/a> reports that road freight produces more than a third of transport-related CO2 and roughly 7% of all energy-related CO2 worldwide. Trucks are the single largest source of diesel demand, at around half the global total. And while trucks and buses make up fewer than 8% of the vehicles on the road, they account for more than 35% of road transport’s direct emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a reason for this, and it is not a lack of effort. Heavy freight is what experts call “hard to abate.” Long-haul trucks, ships, and planes need dense, portable energy that batteries cannot yet provide at the scale and range these jobs demand. The equipment is expensive and lasts decades, so the fleet turns over slowly. Electric trucks are growing fast (global sales more than quadrupled in 2025), but they still represent only a small chunk of the trucks on the road, and will for years to come.<\/span><\/p>\n

So if you are a business that ships freight and you care about your environmental impact, It\u2019s not a good plan to simply wait for zero-emission fleets to become available. Luckily, you don\u2019t have to wait. You can make meaningful emissions cuts in freight right now.<\/span><\/p>\n

What you can do today<\/b><\/h2>\n

The freight industry has several levers you can pull immediately, without any new technology.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shift freight from road to <\/b>rail shipping<\/b><\/a>.<\/b> This is the single most impactful thing you can do, and the numbers are striking. According to the<\/span> Association of American Railroads<\/span><\/a>, freight trains move one ton of cargo an average of 473 miles on a single gallon of fuel, making them three to four times more fuel-efficient than trucks. Moving freight by rail instead of truck can lower greenhouse gas emissions by up to 75% on average. The US Congressional Budget Office reached a similar conclusion independently, finding that trucking emissions per ton-mile run about eight times those of rail. A truck picks up and delivers the cargo itself, but that\u2019s just for first and last mile solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

For long-haul shipments,<\/span> intermodal<\/span><\/a> captures most of that benefit by combining rail’s efficiency with trucking’s flexibility: a truck handles the areas where rail cannot service, and the train handles most of the available lane. On lanes of 500 miles or more, it is often cheaper and dramatically cleaner than shipping by road alone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cut empty miles.<\/b> When a truck runs empty between loads, it burns fuel and moves nothing. Those “<\/span>deadhead<\/span><\/a>” miles made up an average of 16.7% of truck miles in 2024. Every one of them is wasted fuel and wasted money. If you don\u2019t have time constraints, <\/span>consolidation<\/span><\/a> carriers handle this problem very efficiently (albeit slowly).<\/span><\/p>\n

Carriers can<\/span> use cleaner fuels <\/b>until better solutions become available<\/span>.<\/b> Renewable diesel and biodiesel can substantially lower lifecycle emissions, and renewable diesel can operate in existing truck engines without modification. It\u2019s not a complete answer, but it is a real reduction, and it\u2019s available today.<\/span><\/p>\n
